Every Troutbitten regular knows about Sloop. We’ve referred to our friend on nearly every podcast, especially in the last few seasons, as it’s become a running contest to see how we can sneak in a Sloop John B reference.
So we’re excited to have John here. Because what we all find so rewarding about this life on the water are the friendships. We form deep bonds with people because they are . . . fishermen. Because they too are captivated by the trout, by the places trout take us and by the refinement of tactics required to catch a wild trout.
Our friends are at the heart of it all. And really, that’s what we’re adding in tonight — another friend, and possibly the deepest friend to Troutbitten, if we consider how all this started. Sloop tied it all together from the beginning.
Here are good stories and fun with our friend, John Burgos (Sloop).

My wife asked me, “what are you smiling about”? I had my earbud in my ear away from where she was sitting. I said I’m listening to troutbitten.
Good stories of good friends. Makes me think of mine. We’re having breakfast together this week. Cheers.
Nice
To all the Troutbitten crew,
So much thanks for having me on with you guys. I thoroughly enjoyed the evening. And thanks to Dom for a masterful job of editing all of the rambles I went on. The chemistry you guys have is phenomenal. Except for Dell. He’s too grumpy. 🙂
Troutbitten, as this crew knows, probably began around 2008. Fifteen years later! There is not a more “tinkering” bunch of fishermen out there.
For those who listened to this episode, I am not at all surprised with how far Dom’s information and delivery reaches. From that first presentation at DJL to eavesdropping on people at my local Bozeman fly shops, I hear “mono-rig”references all the time.
Thanks for the opportunity to reconnect.
Love ya, Sloop.
Dom,
Really enjoyed this podcast. GOOD fishing buddies are hard to find. I have a question about the father , son guiding you did. (Ryan, Archer) were they fishing mono-rigs or traditional leader fly line set-ups.
Keep up the good work.
Yes, we were working on tight line tactics. Why do you ask?
I’m nearly seventy and have been away from the sport for nearly 30 years. That’s a long story but as I said Good Fishing Buddies are HARD to find. Anyway I was accustomed to a fly line and 7′ to 12′ leaders. I’ve done some high sticking but what I enjoy is the casting, swinging wets and streamers and delicate dry fly work in small to medium sized streams. So I was just wondering what you had them working on and if you guide people fishing the way I described.
After following you on your podcast it sounds like you would be a great teacher but wasn’t sure if you only did mono-rig work.
As I’ve returned to the stream I’ve noticed that a great many fly anglers do not know how to read the water. I assume you also teach that to an extent.
Looking forward to next season with you and the guys.

Great podcast, sounds like a great guy to know!!
For sure.
Dom, you mentioned rods labeled”Custom”. Do you mean rods labeled “Custom Made”? I have a couple. I believe they were made in South Korean and distributed out of Oregon. I got a bit into tournament casting a long time ago, and my friend who taught me some basic tourny stuff loved those rods because they had the right stiffness for his tournies. For a while they were sold out of an outdoor store (Outdoor Emporius in Seattle) for like, $30. I’d buy them through the years because I didn’t see a strong reason to buy better rods. Today I buy better stuff, but not much better. I’m still in the market for a good stiff 10 foot 4 wt for my straight lining, but sadly, the rods I like have moved on to longer lengths. The Hardy Ultralite might still be in a 10 foot 4 wt, but I think the marketing department deemed they need to be longer too. Cheers, Toney
Hi Toney. No, I was just talking about a Scott Custom.
Cheers.
Dom
Another fantastic episode. I very much look forward to the weekly podcasts. It’s like I get to sneak into your campfire evening chats with a cold one. So very well done. Thank you.
Cheers and thank you.
