This podcast is about small stream fishing — specifically, what we love about the places, the fish, the tactics and the experience of fishing smaller trout waters.
These are trout streams that are no wider than the dirt road that you drove in on. And for every blue ribbon trout river, for every destination water that is raved about in the guidebooks and makes every angler’s bucket list, there are numerous tributaries to these main rivers that are mostly overlooked. We see this everywhere we go — small streams get no respect. They’re mostly an afterthought.
We fish small streams for the adventure, for the exploration and the experience. We fish small streams in search of wild trout in wild places. And we fish small streams because the challenges of fly fishing these waters teaches us everything we ever need to know about fishing bigger rivers.

Great podcast,
I find small streams to be all about the anticipation, the endless possibility of what is just up stream, out of view. On large water, it’s open, I can see far upstream and lose that feeling of exploring. The feeling of hunting the water as much as the fish is what small stream fishing is all about to me, if that makes sense.
Looking forward to the Blue Line Bible and more on small water gear set ups.
Great podcast! Any chance you can share your leader formula for small stream fishing?
I’m very competitive. When fishing crowded water, I notice how other anglers are doing and make sure they see me when I’m on a roll. I don’t particularly like that third eye looking at others, but I doubt I will ever change. Small streams offer a respite from myself. I find great comfort and calm when the fishing is just between me and the trout. It’s as if some essence of trout and some, residual, essence of purity in me converge under the cover of hemlocks and in the silence of a small stream’s music.
