I’ve scoured your articles and videos to try to get some more info on tippet length but can’t seem to find the answer I’m looking for.

I Euro fish your mono rig on a river where a lot of the pools are 5-6ft majority of the time (sometimes deeper). One video you mention you don’t change the length of your tippet (~4ft) you just maintain the depth by lowering or lifting your rod tip. This would mean I would be letting the 2 tone indicator into the water. Should I let the two tone dip into the water or should I lengthen the 4x-5x?

Thanks,
Matt

So far I’ve found one niche where the monorig is a superior way of fishing.

I live in Finland and we have a special kind of a fly that I haven’t really seen used anywhere else (or at least in the same way we use it here). It’s called a surfboard and it’s essentially a large baitfish imitation with a gurgler-type foam back. These work espcially well dead drifted like a dry fly in fast, riffled water where achieving long drag-free drifts with an flyline is very hard. With a monorig, I can keep the entire line off the water and easily get perfect drifts even at long distances (A wet surfboard weighs enough to be cast pretty damn far with a monorig).

Hi Dom,
I realize I’m late to the game on this article…but I’m just starting to get interested in two things that I feel like you’ve may have united for me…I’d like to start fishing subsurface (I have been a dry or die guy purely by accident) and I want to play with small shooting heads, like Commando heads, with my switch rod.
Am I weird or does it seem like using the Mono rig would be made really flexible by also bringing a Skagit head and using the typical 20 pound mono running line. Couldn’t you treat it like a leader change and have two quite different options at hand..or would the circumstances be so different that you would use one AND the other in a day. Thanks again, I just discovered your blog and it’s really great stuff.

Hi Mark,

Thank you.

Here is the article you need for a good answer to your question about the 12 lb

Design and Function of the Troutbitten Standard Mono Rig
https://troutbitten.com/2021/03/14/design-and-function-of-the-troutbitten-standard-mono-rig/

If you must substitute it, I’d probably choose Sufix Elite.

Hope that helps.
Dom

I’m looking at this article because I just listened to the Orvis podcast that you were highlighted in. Great podcast!

I have one question about the rig … why use 12 lb Maxima HV? Is it stiffer than 12lb Amnesia? Does it create a taper effect?

What would be your thought on substituting 12lb or 15 lb Yellow/Green Amnesia for the Maxima HV?

Regards,

Mark in UT

4x tag line vs 5x, etc. Blood knot from 4x to 5x or triple surgeons??

Hi Yves. Thanks for the question. Any and all Mono Rigs should be stretched at the beginning of each session. It’s a simple fix, really. I wrote an article with more details.

How do you manage to keep your lazar line straight and untangled? I used OPST 20lbs and it tends to “bundle”?? Thanks!

Hey Dom, what kind of rod and leader setup do you prefer for those small streams? I also fish a lot of brushy blue lines in the Southern Appalachians, and I have yet to find a leader I’m really in love with. I’m currently fishing an 8’ 4wt. with a double taper line for those settings.

I have a couple questions related to the long mono rig running through the guides:

1 – how are you attaching the long mono leader to the fly line?

2 – are you applying anything glue like to the larger knots above the tippet ring so that they run through the guides more smoothly? And if so, what are you using?

3 – what knots are you using?

I fish mostly bigger tail water rivers where the trout have plenty of room to run. Consequently the leader knots may go in and out through the guides several times during a fight with a nice sized fish.
