Podcasts Begin — Episode 1: This Is Troutbitten

by | Sep 19, 2021 | 26 comments

For me, Troutbitten podcasts have been a back burner project for a few years now. But no longer. After months of work, the Troutbitten Podcast is available everywhere that you find and listen to your podcasts.

This first season will feature topics like, How to Handle a Trout, Stocked vs Wild Trout, Stream Etiquette and more. We’ll also dig deep into the tactics side and talk about Night Fishing for Trout, The Mono Rig, Tight Line and Euro Nymphing, Streamers, Dry Flies and a lot of the other stuff that I write about on the website.

This Is Troutbitten

In this inaugural Troutbitten podcast, my friends Bill, Austin, Trevor and Josh join me to discuss how fly fishing for wild trout creates a life on the water.

We consider what it means to fish hard, how hope is the strongest trait of a successful angler, why everything works sometimes, and how fly fishers, all too often, are a little much.

We also talk about the tenets of Troutbitten, or the shared interests and characteristics about fly fishing that bring us together and keep us excited about trout fishing for a lifetime.

In 2014, Troutbitten.com started with fishing stories and tips. And from the beginning, the tactics articles have leaned toward the advanced angler without neglecting the beginner. Now over 700 articles deep, this Troutbitten website has become a huge resource for trout anglers on a fly rod — and always with the goal to educate and entertain.

The addition of the podcast platform offers a novel way to reach anglers where they are — in the car, at the tying desk, at the gym or cooking dinner. And I’m excited about the possibilities for this new format.

Big thanks and credit goes to Josh Darling of Wilds Media for the sound engineering on these episodes.

Then, Now, Later

Like the launch of the guide service, the Troutbitten Shop, the YouTube channel and the books to come, this podcast series is a milestone moment for the Troutbitten business. It’s also another chance to be creative and a new opportunity to work with and learn from other like minded anglers. This is a good life.

Fish hard, friends.

Central Pennsylvania

Hi. I’m a father of two young boys, a husband, author, fly fishing guide and a musician. I fish for wild brown trout in the cool limestone waters of Central Pennsylvania year round. This is my home, and I love it. Friends. Family. And the river.

Fish and Film – Fishing Fall Streamers (VIDEO)

Fish and Film – Fishing Fall Streamers (VIDEO)

Nothing compares to actively fishing streamers and watching trout attack the fly. In early November, I found good streamer action in some favorite water. The takes were spotty enough that I had to work for them, but frequent enough that I could learn the preferences of the trout and dial in a presentation . . .

PODCAST: Why We Fish — S13, Ep6

PODCAST: Why We Fish — S13, Ep6

Tonight we’re here to talk about why we fish. It’s a simple question. Why do we commit so much of our free time and efforts, our thoughts and our daydreams . . . to fishing?

It’s the same natural pursuit that brought us all down to the water from the beginning.

The Jerk Strip – Streamer Presentations VIDEO

The Jerk Strip – Streamer Presentations VIDEO

Moving the fly with the rod tip and not just the line hand is a fundamental skill that opens up many presentations that bring trout to a streamer.

The jerk strip is critical for any serious streamer angler. It’s a must-have skill for animating the fly — for selling the streamer to a fish. And it’s the baseline for what I think of as a jig strip, a twitch strip, a glide strip, a head flip and twitch, a lane change, and much more. At its core, the jerk strip is a hand off from left to right — it’s about moving the fly with the rod tip and then recovering with the line hand. In this way, the jerk strip sets the table for everything else . . .

PODCAST: Barbed Hooks or Barbless? Does It Really Matter? — S13, Ep5

PODCAST: Barbed Hooks or Barbless? Does It Really Matter? — S13, Ep5

Should we always fish barbless? Maybe not. The answer isn’t that simple. So the Troutbitten guys are here for a conversation and a few thoughts about barbs on hooks.

Each one of us has fished for long enough that we’ve used both barbed and barbless flies. We’ve also used barbs on lures and bait hooks, because we all grew up fishing in different ways. Some anglers who jump right into the fly fishing game — especially for trout — are exposed to a another sentiment. So their reference points are different. And like anything else, what might seem almost outlandish to one person can seem like no big deal to another.

PODCAST: Finding Your Confidence Flies — S13, Ep4

PODCAST: Finding Your Confidence Flies — S13, Ep4

Every angler needs a set of flies to call their own. Among the thousands of patterns, options and choices out there, eventually, we sort out a handful of confidence flies.

Our faith in these flies gives us conviction when choosing them and tying the knot. We’ll fish THIS fly in THIS water. That’s what will catch the next trout. And if it doesn’t, then we’ll change something — maybe the water type, maybe the presentation, maybe the rig. Or maybe we’ll reach for the next confidence fly.

  5. Great first episode, looking forward to future installments, particularly some
deeper discussion of tactics. Overall though, the sound was great, good conversational flow, was balanced, structured but not stilted.

    Keep ‘em coming.

    • Hi Dom,

Thanks for the input. That’s kind.

Tactics are coming. Episode 3 or 4 is on the versatility of the Mono Rig.

      Cheers.

  8. Nice Dom. I’m an old man now, as much as I hate to admit it, and don’t live near really any fishable water. That doesn’t stop me from being a fisherman everyday. During the pandemic, I reacquainted myself with flytying, and live vicariously through every fly I ty in hopes that one of these days it will catch a fish. That’s eternal optimism at its best. I get out a few times a year and cherish every minute. Keep up the good work. Listening to the podcast reminds me of the many conversations my fishing buddies and I used to have. Really good stuff!

  9. Great start with a hot medium! A very enjoyable listen; relaxed yet passionate; informative yet humble. Left me wanting more.

One topic that I’d love to hear given your group’s collective experiences is your thoughts on the variables that combine to create those magical days (or nights) when the whiskeys and namers are active, aggressive, and end up in your nets. The effects of moon phase, weather, water conditions, and biomass.
    Thanks Dom.

And, yes, that’s a good topic. I’ll add that to the growing list of discussions.

Cheers, and thanks for the support.

  13. “….and how fly fishers, all too often, are a little much.” LOL, true, but that’s true about anything that someone is passionate about. If someone is really juiced up about a topic/hobby whatever, they’re gonna come off as a weirdo to normal people unless they are really self-aware. But yes, it’s true, and funny. Me and my boys talk about how you can be a nerd on any topic, just own it.

Congratulations on your success, Domenic, and here’s to continued momentum.

  14. Just finished your podcast, really enjoyable and informative. You just reinforced some of my beliefs. The part about taking your kids with you paralleled my experience with mine from fifty years ago. My middle daughter still talks about “her fish” that I caught when I was showing her where to cast. Keep up the good work.

  15. Good stuff, fellas! Looking forward to future episodes.

I anticipate that key phrases, as well as descriptions of various circumstances and techniques will resonate deeply with me and other anglers in this format, especially considering the experience this group offers.

  16. Great pod. Loved it. Sounded authentic and unrehearsed. You make it clear that what you do, you don’t do for beginners. As a beginner at fly fishing, I am not a beginner at life. I’ve felt the passion that you and your friends have for fly fishing for other things and have a glimpse of the feeling myself. Hearing you guys talk about it just makes me want to fish hard and see what happens for myself. Be well, fish hard.

    • Thanks! It’s surely unrehearsed.. We don’t have time for rehearsal. Ha. Just have a loose format for topics to cover and to from there. That’s kind of how I write as well. Keeps the creatively flexible.
      Cheers.
