Introducing . . . The Riverside Video Series

** NOTE ** Videos appear below

The Troutbitten Riverside Video Series is something I’ve wanted to bring to the Troutbitten project for a long time. And now, almost unexpectedly, it’s here.

Riverside . . . is a place for sharing some of the latest articles from Troutbitten and streamside thoughts. It’s a casual approach in my studio, with modest production, so the time commitment is far less than what I put into each video in the Fish and Film series.

Through the years, I’ve fielded many requests for this kind of video — basically a reading of Troutbitten articles. I’ve always liked the idea, but I wanted to do a little more with it. So I’ve taken some b-roll and mixed it in with the article read, just for some background, some ambience and a setting. Also,

In these spots, I may also take the time to share updates or candid thoughts about what’s going on in the fly fishing world or my life on the water.

We’ll see where it all goes. But I’m happy to share with you the first two episodes of Riverside. Here they are . . .

This Is Real Silence

This Is Real Silence

. . . It can be dead silent on that mountain, quiet enough to remember a place in time with no interruptions, a day that started in a bustling, wide valley and finished in stillness on top of a mountain.

. . . . . . The guitar amp, the voices, the conversations, the laughing and arguing, the engine noise and the truck’s rattles, the NPR opinion and the crackly speakers — it’s all gone. And it’ll stay gone for as long as I’m here on the mountaintop. This is real silence.

VIDEO: The Dorsey Yarn Indicator — Our Best and Most Versatile Indy Choice — Building It and Fishing It

For over a decade, my Troutbitten friends and I have fished a small yarn indicator that weighs nothing, is extremely sensitive, versatile, cheap, doesn’t affect the cast, and flat out catches more trout than any other indicator we’ve ever used. What we call “the Dorsey” is a daily-use tool that is integral to our nymphing system. We mount it on a tight line rig or a traditional leader with fly line. It floats like crazy. It signals takes and information about the drift like no other indy we’ve ever used, and it’s an unstoppable fish catcher.

Dry or Die?

Dry or Die?

. . . There’s a segment of fly anglers who will never see streamers, nymphs or wet flies as a legitimate offering. That’s fine. Keep it to yourself.

There’s another segment of fly fishers who believe trophy hunting for big browns with big streamers is the only way to live out there. And everything else might as well be tweed hats and waxed catgut. That’s fine too. Keep it to yourself.

The majority of us are fishermen, just having fun, trying to catch a fish and then catch another one . . .

Tippet Protection and Nymphing Rods

Tippet Protection and Nymphing Rods

Here’s the bottom line: You do not need an extra-soft rod tip to protect delicate tippets while nymphing. Skip past that selling point in the marketing jargon, and make your fly rod decision on the other factors that matter.

  1. Dominick, thank you to you and the rest of the gang for all the great content! If you cut the first 20” off the butt section of a store bought extruded leader and replaced it with 20” of 15# Maxima Chameleon would it provide the same advantages as the Harvey Leader? I think I know the answer. Go try it and see if it works. Thanks again for all you do. Love the on the water videos. Please keep it coming.a

    • Nah, wouldn’t even be close. I don’t mean to be argumentative, but the taper of the Harvey is very different than almost all store bought leaders.

      Cheers.
