VIDEO: Mono Rig Mods — All the Adjustment for a Versatile, Hybrid System

by | Aug 19, 2024 | 12 comments

** NOTE ** Video for Mono Rig Mods Appears Below.

I first wrote about the Mono Rig nearly a decade ago. And in the years since, the understanding and acceptance of tight line tactics has gained enormous momentum. Much of the education across articles, books and videos gets lumped into the header of euro nymphing. But we do so much more with a Mono Rig. To complicate things, the term is now used for micro rigs and other specialized, long leaders. I agree that any leader long enough to keep the fly line on the reel is a Mono Rig, but I’ve started referring to my best leader as the Troutbitten Standard Mono Rig, simply to clear some confusion and create distinction.

The Troutbitten Standard Mono Rig provides unique advantages for many tactics. We fish nymphs, both tight line and indicator style, streamers in many different ways, tight line dry dropper, and even pure dry flies, all with this Troutbitten Standard Mono Rig, all with the tight line advantage.

It’s a versatile tool. It’s a hybrid system. And to maximize those options, simple adjustments are necessary. This video shows those adjustments in detail.

Two popular Troutbitten articles serve as the perfect companion resources to this video. So give these a read and follow the links scattered throughout, if you really want to jump down the rabbit hole.

My friends and I don’t leave the truck with our mind set on a certain tactic. We let the trout make those decisions, and we’re ready for anything. The Troutbitten Standard Mono Rig is the perfect tool for such an approach.

Here’s the video . . .

All Of That?

Surely, some anglers might look at all those adjustments and be overwhelmed. But I’m not making all of these changes at once. Throughout a good long day of fishing, I might make three or four of these changes. And in a short morning, I might make just one.

But the options . . .  are always there.

Fish hard, friends.

Twelve Small Stream Fly Casting Tips

Twelve Small Stream Fly Casting Tips

With all the right tools of rod, line, and leader, with all the knowledge about casting options, and with serious dedication to line speed, you need just one more thing.

Guts. Courage. Fortitude.

A willingness to fail.

Take your shots. That’s the only way toward a real education on small streams. Make the casts you think you can’t make. Eventually, instinct takes over and the fly goes into tighter targets than you ever thought possible . . .

Favorite Small Stream Leader — Formula, Reasons and Stories

Favorite Small Stream Leader — Formula, Reasons and Stories

This small stream leader provides the control to cast through the brush yet still achieve good dead drifts on the dry fly. It’s tailor made for precision dry fly fishing in the brush, but it’s versatile enough to fish other styles. For me, this is the perfect small stream leader, and it’s been with me for a very long time.

That kind of control is exactly what is needed on small streams with cover. You can do magic tricks with the fly, twisting around corners and dipping it just inches under the next tree branch. Sure the cast matters most, but a leader that’s built for the job goes hand in hand, completing a system built for the challenges of small trout streams.

Stop Looking at Your Backcast

Stop Looking at Your Backcast

Admiring your casting loops makes you less accurate while also removing your focus from the water and your target. It’s a beginner’s habit that anyone can break in a couple hours, And it’s worth it.

How Big of an Ask?

How Big of an Ask?

Are trout opportunistic feeders? Sure, but it depends on the opportunity. We choose the fly and decide how to present it. We then pick what water will receive the cast. And to inform those decisions, it’s critical to understand what we’re asking the trout to do.

How big of an ask is it?

And how opportunistic do we expect the trout to be?

Here are a few examples . . .

VIDEO: HOW You Set the Hook Matters Most! — Hook Sets for Dry Flies, Nymphs, Streamers and Wets

This video breaks down all of the important things about hook set direction, hook set distance and hook set timing.

Setting the hooks is the most exciting part of the day. For all the time we spend planning, prepping, wading, tying, casting and drifting, it’s all in anticipation of that brief moment when a trout eats the fly. You fooled a trout. So, don’t screw it up. That’s why the hook set matters most. And planning for the hookset, thinking about how a trout might eat the fly and how we will respond, makes all the difference.

  1. You know, in all these years I never once thought about the transition section lessening sag… I assumed it was there purely for taper for casting purposes, so I skipped it I’ve always just gone straight to a tapered sighter. So since 2016 my main rig has been 20lb to 15lb red amnesia to 12lb green amnesia or gold stren to the ring.

That has always worked really nicely for me, BUT….. Gonna have to mess with that now!
