Fish With Friends — Doc and Darling, Night Fishing and the Bad Mother Night Fly

by | Jul 5, 2023 | 4 comments

The Fish With Friends series continues with Josh and Trevor on a night fishing trip. It’s hard to find good fishing buddies, and it’s even harder to find ones that will fish at night. But these guys have logged more night hours together than most anglers will put in over a lifetime.

Night fishing around here is tough. There are no freebies, and nothing comes easy. So it’s good to see a couple large fish come to the net for this video.

Enjoy this short film with good fishing friends. Then scroll below to find the recipe for the Bad Mother Night Fly below . . .

Hi. I’m a father of two young boys, a husband, author, fly fishing guide and a musician. I fish for wild brown trout in the cool limestone waters of Central Pennsylvania year round. This is my home, and I love it. Friends. Family. And the river.

Night Shift – Into the Dark

Night Shift – Into the Dark

You can't stand up to the night until you understand what's hiding in its shadows.  -- Charles De Lint Last June I made a commitment. I promised myself that I would go deep into the night game and learn to catch the wildest trout in the darkest hours. Having spent a...

Night Shift – Breaking the Ice

Night Shift – Breaking the Ice

I've been fishing in the dark two other times since my last Night Shift report, and on each of those trips I experienced limited zero success. I knew that winter night fishing was going to beat me up and test my resolve, however, it's been even slower than I...

Night Shift – Skunked

Night Shift – Skunked

I've read a lot of fishing blogs, and I can't recall any accounts of a complete shut out.  I've seen lots of hero poses with gorgeous slabs of wild trout spilling over wet, dripping hands with the flash of a fly rod reflecting in the sun. My RSS feed is filled with...

Night Shift – The Thicket

Night Shift – The Thicket

Friday night I wrapped up my gig at the Phyrst with my buddy Noah, then made the transformation from musician to fisherman again. I've done this a bunch of times now, and the thorough contrast in venues is remarkable: from the noise and chaos of the State College bar...

Night Shift – Christmas Lights

Night Shift – Christmas Lights

I decided to fish close to home and in a section that rolls through a small neighborhood.  No, it's more like a series of cabins.  It was an odd choice.  A great choice during the day, but at night I always try to stay away from light sources because I've learned that...

Night Shift – One of These Days …

One of these days I'm going to file an amazing night fishing report . . . I started about an hour before dark, and action was crazy good on nymphs. Basically, I was Frank Nale-ing it, but just imagine what I could have done with a gold bead white spinner. Right before...

  1. Great video. Difficult to encompass the experience until you’ve done it. Peaceful , exhilarating, scary, a varied range of emotions each time out. As a long time follower, when did you add the foam tab? I’ve fished variations for years, but always have depended on the deer hair for buoyancy

    • Good eye. I started adding that foam tab a couple years ago. I tie it into the fly, but then sometimes I clip it or rip it complete off, while on the water, if I want the fly riding lower.

      Cheers.

  2. I loved the format of this video. Some chat about the subject, some video, Dom showing the fly and giving clues then more fish video. Short to the point and sweet.

I will be tying some Bad Motha’s tonight.
