Fish and Film – Fishing Fall Streamers (VIDEO)

Fishing is a story . .

Nothing beats a good streamer bite. As much as we all love fishing dry flies and nymphs, nothing compares to actively fishing streamers and watching trout attack the fly. In early November, I found good streamer action in some favorite water. The takes were spotty enough that I had to work for them, but frequent enough that I could learn the preferences of the trout and dial in a presentation.

I fished three shifts, covering different parts of the river. And as most any day with streamers goes, trout had their moments . . .

Efficiency: Part 1 – Knots

"You can't catch a fish without your fly in the water." Efficiency has become a game for me; it's something I enjoy; it's something I think about when I'm not fishing, and I'm constantly trying to improve on a system that keeps my flies in the water and the downtime...

DIY – Bar Boots

DIY – Bar Boots

I burn through boot soles fast. And cheap boots with poor foot support are a bad idea when you're wading heavy runs and putting full days on the water with lots of hiking, so I was spending about $150 every ten months on a new pair of boots. I used to resole my own...

The Backing Barrel

A decade ago I learned about euro-nymphing, and I was impressed with the rig. I gradually made the switch from a Joe Humphreys nymphing style, worked my way through the short line tactics, then lengthened the leader and learned to fish at distance.  I believe...

  3. Hi Dom,

Watching you execute a double head-flip, a stop, flip and stall finally registered with me. These films on the water are great. Thanks for the content. Also, I never get to see the background music credits… Is that also you on your ‘day off’????
Happy Thanksgiving the you, the family and your extended team.

  4. It looks like you had the line wrapped around the rod? ??

  5. Happy holidays to you and your family, Dom!

I was having trouble visualizing how your rod movements caused the head-flip until I searched for “streamer head flip” knowing that I’d find content. Sure enough, I found the specific video and your key comment that the best, if not only, time to effect a head turn easily is when the streamer is across from you, not upstream or downstream. Then it clicked and I got it…the video showing the streamer floating slowly also helped to illustrate how the head turns without moving the streamer through the water. Bingo!

    Thanks, as always!
