Small streams provide unique challenges to the fly angler. The canopy and close quarters of a stream no wider than the dirt road you drove in on teaches everything you need to know about good fly casting. In the brush, there is no forgiveness for poor form. The leader design must suit the moment. Here is the small stream leader I’ve used for over two decades to chase wild trout in mountain streams and tight quarters.

It’s seven-feet long, and it’s an adaptation of a Charlie Meck design.

The Troutbitten Small Stream leader provides excellent control to cast through the brush and achieve great dead drifts on the dry fly. It’s tailor made for precision dry fly fishing in the brush, and it’s versatile enough to fish other styles. For me, this is the perfect small stream leader, and it’s been with me for a very long time.

Three Parts of an Ideal Indicator Leader — And One Great Formula

I’m not much of a gear guy. I demand a solid pair of waders, and I’m picky about my boots, but I don’t obsess over rods and reels. I have what I need, I guess. I am a leader junkie, though, and I have been since the beginning. Early on, I understood how critical...

Of Nets and Holsters — The Smith Creek Net Holster

Things fall apart. That’s why I don’t do many gear reviews. Usually sooner than later, everything I fish with breaks, separates, leaks, delaminates or disintegrates, so I don’t recommend things very much. Entropy swallows up fishing gear pretty quickly. But the [eafl...

Fifty Fly Fishing Tips: #20 — Find the Best Light Angles, and See What You’re Fishing

As the sun dropped below the tree line, the water surface turned a dark gunmetal grey, and I lost track of my caddis. I fought the glare for a while, tilting my head, pushing my sunglasses up to my forehead and flipping them back down minutes later. I still couldn’t...

Land With Contact or Without, When Using a Tuck Cast — Tight Line and Euro Nymphing

For underwater presentations, I cast so my flies land first, always. I cannot think of a circumstance where this is not true. The weighted fly or added split shot hits the water first, and the tippet follows. The leader, maybe an indy, and then the fly line lay on the...

Fifty Fly Fishing Tips: #8 — Use the Davy Knot — Here’s why

I hesitate to include the Davy Knot as a tip in this series. There are a bunch of good fishing knots out there. They all work. Everyone has their favorite, and no one wants to be told what to do. So I won’t tell you to change to the Davy Knot. I’ll just show you why I...
