Dry flies need slack, so give it to them. This hand-tied Harvey leader is designed to land in s-curves throughout the leader. Flies without slack drag immediately, and most trout refuse a dragging fly. So providing s-curves with accuracy is the key to dry fly fishing.

The Troutbitten Harvey Dry Leader is a different tool than the standard extruded leaders found in fly shops.

This is my favorite dry fly leader, with minor adaptations to George Harvey’s original design. The Harvey Dry Leader has enough power to turn over large flies. It also excels at remarkably subtle, delicate presentations with the smallest flies.

This leader finishes with 5X nylon tippet. Onstream adjustments of the terminal tippet to match the fly are needed and expected.

Nymphing: Three Ways to Dead Drift — Bottom Bounce, Strike Zone, Tracking

Nymphing is the most complex tactic in fly fishing. A dead drift is the most common goal, but there are three distinct ways to achieve it: bottom bouncing, strike zone rides and tracking the flies. Each of these tactics simulates something that a trout sees every day....

Dry Fly Fishing — The George Harvey Leader Design

Summer is my favorite time of the year to throw dry flies. While I do spend many spring trips casting dries during the major hatches of the East, I also enjoy excellent nymphing action all through those wet months. So I fish a lot of dry dropper from April to June....

Don’t Hate Split Shot — Have a System (with VIDEO)

Two Days in the Deep Freeze

I spent most of the last two days in, on and around it, partially covered and burdened by it; and breaking, chipping and melting it ---  ICE. I've fished the single digit temps a handful of times before, but it's been a while since I've had that chance, so when I read...

Stop the Split-Shot-Slide (UPDATED)

AN UPDATE (SEPTEMBER 2017) Fishing keeps me problem solving, innovating, and guessing. It's one of things I love most about tramping around in the valleys with a long rod. And oftentimes, my ideas grow into something newer, something better and something more...
