The Harvey Gold has the heart of the Harvey Dry leader, with a little more power in the butt section and a piece of Gold Stren for a short sighter. Three small foams are part of the system, allowing for a quick swap of tippet sections, each specifically built for the river conditions, making this a truly modular leader without sacrifices.

No sacrifices? That’s not completely true. Because any tool that’s built to do many things will give up specifics somewhere. But these changes to the standard Harvey Dry Fly leader provide unique advantages as well.

Built on the Harvey Dry Fly leader platform, the Harvey Gold is a dry fly leader first. However, the heavier butt section provides more punch for throwing streamers and indicators. The extra butt section length gives a few extra feet of tight line reach, and the subtle Gold Stren sighter provides the visible advantages of a sighter without spooking trout.

A 1.5 mm tippet ring at the end of the Gold Stren sighter provides the perfect place to swap out tippet sections and transition to nymphs, streamers or wet flies. Three small rigging foams are included, so you can pre-rig tippet sections or save sections on the river, with the flies intact.

When river conditions or the trout’s mood call for quick changes between tactics, choose the Harvey Gold.

Border Collie and the Thunderstorm

The border collie sensed incoming weather before I did. Under the contrast of black on white, beneath mottled pink skin and between the ears, was a group of unknown senses, not just for the weather, but for a number of intangibles I never seemed to recognize. He...

What Fishing Does to Your Brain

My fishing memory is punctuated by a few landmark moments, with all other trips, preparations and the accompanying research lined up in between. These keystones have served as pivot points, as markers to capitalize the endeavors and then move on. Catching my first...

Right Here

I guess I’ve been searching for something. For months now, I’ve spent my time on the water fishing progressively more remote locations. Turning down offers to float and cast over abundant wild brown trout on our major rivers, I thought I was looking for solitude. What...

This is the End

The fisher awoke before dawn. He put his boots on. He chose the rod from a gallery of graphite and cork, and he walked into the forest. Down a narrow hall canopied by hemlock boughs and sycamores, he moved through thick, hazy darkness -- miles toward the island, with...

Fly Fishing Strategies — The Add-On Line

Adding a second fly to the tippet section usually improves your chances of fooling a trout. Sure, there are times when the precision of just one fly is an advantage, but more often than not, I fish with multiple fly rigs. I like two nymphs, two streamers, and two...

Following Through

This morning should have been like any other. Kill the alarm and hate life for the first five minutes as my body begrudgingly catches up to the will of ambition. Coffee helps. So does the routine, because the inevitability of repetition and pattern seems certain. It...
